“Old Blue Eyes” recorded this Cole Porter tune along with hundreds of others. But what does that have to do with David Bernstein?

It’s all up to David Bernstein!

Week Eight:

August 15-21, 2025

After a month of dead-end research and a downright depressing residency at the grim Tiberias Holiday Flats, David Bernstein pursues a new thread in the search for his mortal father. His only real clue: it might have been Herod Antipas. Not an attractive parentage. But that man’s father, David’s potential grandfather, was Herod the Great. Though repulsed by that king’s Slaughter of the Innocents, David knows from his architecture studies that this particular Herod was also an avid builder. He relocates to a luxury hotel ten miles from Masada National Park, the ruins of Herod’s magnificent fortress stronghold.

Tuesday, August 19, David makes his last of many trips to the park. From the start he sensed something important was drawing him there, but, aside from the architectural beauty of the ruins, he realizes that his mortal father probably wouldn’t have been alive in 73 CE. This year is the park’s focus: the story of the last stand of the Zealots against the Romans, culminating in the mass suicide of over 900 men, women and children. Time to move on, probably to Petra, Jordan, and some break time with Cleo.

He has an early dinner in the hotel restaurant. A guy with a guitar who sings swing songs is the entertainment. The couple at the table next to David’s steal glances at him. When the singer starts up an old Sinatra standard- -Bingo!- -they tell David he looks exactly like that guy who used to do all Sinatra covers. What was his name again? Neither of them remembers.

This whole trip has been a bust. The only thing David’s learned in six and a half weeks is that he looks like some Sinatra-singing has-been. What good is that?

One day, he’s gonna find out!
